2 Gender & Number of Nouns In Spanish, all nouns belong to one of two gender categories: masculine or feminine. Masculine nouns usually end in -o (carro). Feminine nouns usually end in -a (fruta). Singular nouns name one of something. Plural nouns name more than one of something. If a singular noun ends in a vowel, add -s to make it plural. 4 Definite Articles The definite articles in Spanish can be used to say the with a specific noun. They have different forms that agree with their noun in gender and number. masc. fem. singular plural el las la los the

5 Definite Articles Use definite articles to talk about a noun as a general category or when saying what you like with gustar. —¿Cómo es la pizza? —Es deliciosa. Me gusta la pizza. What’s pizza (in general) like? It’s delicious. I like pizza. —¿Cómo son las verduras? —Son deliciosas. Me gustan las verduras. What are vegetables like? They’re delicious. I like vegetables.

6 Gustar Use the verb gustar to say what people like. If the thing they like is singular, use gusta. If it's plural, use gustan. gusta (singular items) o gustan (plural items) Me gusta la pizza. Me gustan las hamburguesas. Nos gusta la música. Nos gustan las películas.

14 The pronouns LE and LES have more than one meaning. LE can mean him, her, it, you (usted). LES can mean them or you all (ustedes). To specify who likes something, use the word a before the name or subject pronoun (él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas, ustedes) Ejemplo: Le gusta la pizza. / A Juan le gusta la pizza. Ejemplo: Les gusta la pizza. / A ellas les gusta la pizza. / A Marta y a Isabel les gusta la pizza.

20 The preposition de to show possession or relationship. (of) Es el carro de Ernesto. = It is Ernesto’s car. Es el dos de enero. = It is the second of January. to indicate what type of thing you’re describing. (about) los libros de aventuras = the books about adventure (adventure books) las películas de misterio = the movies about mystery (mystery movies) to say someone’s origin. (from) Julio es de Costa Rica. = Julio is from Costa Rica.

21 Look at the word after the blank When talking about a Proper Noun (ie, Names, Places, something well-known) we use “de”. Los libros son de Julieta. = The books are Juliet’s. El Parque Central de Nueva York es grande = New York’s Central park is big. When talking about a generic person (no specific name), place or thing, we use “de + el/la/los/las” to say “of the, from the, about the” El principal de la escuela es trabajador. Las notas (grades) de las chicas son fenomenales.

22 “de + el/la/los/las” to say “of the, from the, about the” However, there is one irregular form and that is de + el Because the end of the first word (de) has the same sound as the beginning of the second word (el), when we say the words naturally they blend together. Because we combine them verbally, we also combine them in writing…..and they become del La comida del (de el) restaurante es mala. Los libros del (de el) autor son interesantes. Las fiestas del (de el) muchacho son horribles.

25 Answering Yes/No questions To answer yes, put the word sí before the rest of your sentence. —¿Te gusta el helado? — Sí, me gusta el helado. —¿Te gustan las frutas? — Sí, me gustan las frutas.

26 Answering Yes/No questions Saying you don’t like something To answer no or to say that someone doesn’t like something, put the word no before the pronoun to say don't or doesn't. —¿Te gusta la fruta? —No, no me gusta la fruta. —¿Te gusta la música de Puerto Rico? —No, no me gusta la música de Puerto Rico. —¿Te gustan las verduras? —No, no me gustan las verduras.

27 Asking who likes something To ask who likes something or to ask who is being talked about, use the questions: ¿A quién le gusta la pizza? – A Juan le gusta la pizza. ¿A quién le gustan las fiestas? – A Juan le gustan las fiestas. ¿A quiénes les gusta la pizza? – A Juan y a Marta les gusta la pizza. ¿A quiénes les gustan las fiestas? – A Juan y a Marta les gustan las fiestas.

29 ¿Por qué? & porque To ask why, use ¿Por qué? Answer with porque (because). — ¿Por qué te gusta la comida china? — Me gusta porque es deliciosa. — ¿Por qué no te gusta el ajedrez? — No me gusta porque es aburrido. — ¿Por qué te gustan los libros de aventura? — Me gustan porque son interesantes.
