How do you know when to stem change? You had to memorize a list of stem change verbs: Querer (e-ie) Empezar (e-ie) Jugar (u-ue) Pedir (e-i) Encontrar (o-ue) Etc…

When do you preterite stem change? Stem changing in the preterite is EASY!!!! Follow these three simple rules: 1.You stem change only “IR” verbs. 2.You only stem change the “ella” and “ellas” forms. 3.The verb will only change from “E-I” or “O-U”. 4. You conjugate the other forms like normal.

Preterite Verbs with i > y Spelling Change

Preterite i > y Spell Change Verbs Verbs ending in –uir, such as destruir, have a spelling change in the preterite. The i becomes y in the Ud/él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.

Preterite i > y Spell Change Verbs Other verbs such as leer creer oír and caerse follow a similar pattern.

DESTRUIR destruí destruiste destruyó destruimos destruisteis destruyeron

CREER creí creíste creyó creímos creísteis creyeron

OÍR oí oíste oyó oímos oísteis oyeron
