Sra. Schwarz Present Tense of ER and IR Verbs

Sra. Schwarz You already know how to conjugate present tense AR verbs. First, remember to remove the AR from the end of the verb. Then, add the appropriate AR verb endings (o, as, a, amos, áis, an) to conjugate the verb.

yo hablonosotros hablamos nosotras hablamos tú hablasvosotros habláis vosotras habláis Ud. habla él habla ella habla (“it”) habla Uds. hablan ellos hablan ellas hablan (plural “it”) hablan Sra. Schwarz

Remember that there are exactly 3 types of verbs in Spanish: AR, ER, and IR infinitives. You already know how to conjugate regular AR verbs. Now, let’s learn how to conjugate ER and IR verbs!

Sra. Schwarz Some ER Spanish infinitives that you already know are beber, leer, comer, ver, comprender, and correr. The pattern for ER verbs is similar to the pattern for AR verbs. The main difference is that ER verb endings use an “e” where AR verb endings use an “a.”

I eatWe eat You eatYou all eat He She eats (it) They eat Sra. Schwarz

yo comonosotros comemos nosotras comemos tú comesvosotros coméis vosotras coméis Ud. come él come ella come (“it”) come Uds. comen ellos comen ellas comen (plural “it”) comen Sra. Schwarz

Let’s conjugate some more ER verbs that you already know!

Recall that the verb ver means to see or to watch. The conjugation of ver follows the pattern of other ER verbs, except: The yo form is veo, not “vo.” The vosotros form is veis, not “véis.”

yo veonosotros vemos nosotras vemos tú vesvosotros veis vosotras veis Ud. ve él ve ella ve (“it”) ve Uds. ven ellos ven ellas ven (plural “it”) ven Sra. Schwarz

Now, you have learned how to conjugate AR and ER verbs. Next, let’s look at IR verbs!

Sra. Schwarz The verb endings for ER and IR verbs are the same except for the nosotros and vosotros forms. ER verbs: nosotros = -emos; vosotros = -éis IR verbs: nosotros = -imos; vosotros = -ís
