Saber and Conocer Saber and conocer both mean to know.

saber sé sabes sabe sabemos saben The verb saber is irregular in its yo form.

Saber = to know a fact, to know data Sabemos que Rodolfo y Luisa son estudiantes. ¿Sabes los días de la semana? Yo sé el número de teléfono de Pablo.. 62

Yo sé esquiar. ¿Sabes cocinar? Los niños no saben nadar. Saber + infinitive* = to know how (to do something) * Conocer is never followed by an infinitive.

Saber is often followed by a question word.* Sabemos quién es Plácido Domingo. ¿Sabes dónde está la oficina de correos? No sé cuándo sale el tren para San José. * Conocer is never followed by a question word.

Saber is also used when we know something from memory (de memoria) Abuelita sabe el himno nacional costarricense. ¡ Vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz!

Conocer = to know or to be familiar with a person a place or thing. Conozco a la señora Muñoz.

Yo sé quién es Drake, pero no conozco a Drake personalmente. Sabemos dónde está Houston, pero no conocemos la ciudad. Julia sabe que Einstein recibió el premio Nobel, pero no conoce sus obras. Notice the contrast between saber and conocer in the following sentences. I know who Drake is, but I don’t know Drake personally. We know where Houston is, but we aren’t familiar with the city. Julia knows that Einstein received the Nobel prize, but she isn’t acquainted with his works.

OJO- when conocer is followed by a person, you must use the personal “a” before the person. Ej. Yo conozco a tus padres. Mis estudiantes conocen al señor Wrinkle. You do not use the personal “a” when you are familiar with a place. Ej. Conozco Cedar Park.
