Verbos reflexivos Reflexive Verbs Telling what people do for themselves

Verbos reflexivos Se usa el reflexivo cuando una persona hace una acción a si misma. (The reflexive is used when a person does an action to themselves.) Se usa pronombres reflexivos para indicar esto. (Reflexive pronouns are used to indicate this)

Verbos reflexivos Non-Reflexive:Reflexive: Marta cepilla el perro. Marco se cepilla. Marta = Subject Perro = direct object Marta performs action, but the dog receives it. Marco = Subject Marco = direct object Marco performs action, and he receives it.

Verbos reflexivos Non-Reflexive:Reflexive: Carlos lava la ropa. Aarón se lava. Carlos = Subject La ropa = direct object Carlos performs action, but the clothes receive it. Aarón = Subject Aarón = direct object Aarón performs action, and he receives it.

Verbos reflexivos Lavarse Yo me lavo I wash myself Tú te lavas You wash yourself Él se lava He washes himself Nos lavamos We wash ourselves Os laváis You wash yourselves Ellos se lavan They wash themselves Tú te lavas con el jabón. You wash yourself with soap.

Verbos reflexivos Ponerse Yo me pongo I dress myself/I put on Tú te pones You dress yourself Él se pone He dresses himself Nos ponemos We dress ourselves Os ponéis You dress yourselves Ellos se ponen They dress themselves Nosotros nos ponemos la ropa. We put on the clothes.

Dormir vs Dormirse The verb forms are the same: duermo, duermes, duerme, dormimos, duermen The difference in form is the addition of the reflexive pronouns: me, te, se, nos, se The difference in meaning is: –Dormir: to sleep –Dormirse: to fall asleep Reflexive verbs often have a special meaning, such as ‘change in condition’ – from being awake to being asleep.

Verbos reflexivos Los Negativos: To make a reflexive negative, add a “no” before the pronoun. ¿No te lavas las manos? Ellos no se cepillan el pelo.

Verbos reflexivos Con el cuerpo y la ropa: When you use the reflexive with body parts or clothing you use an article (el/la) not a possessive adjective (mi/mis) Yo me lavo la cara. Te pones la camisa. Me cepillo los dientes.

Verbos reflexivos Con infinitivos: When you use the reflexive with an infinitive of a verb, the pronoun is attached to the end of the INFINITIVE. Yo voy a lavarme el pelo. Él va a lavarse. Nosostros vamos a maquillarnos.

A morning routine Todos los días, yo ______ (levantarse) a las 7:00. ______ (ir) al baño, _______ (lavarse) la cara, y _______ (afeitarse). Luego ______ (vestirse = e > i) y ______ (tomar) un poco de desayuno. Por fin, _______ (lavarse) los dientes. Hint: not all the verbs in this paragraph are reflexive!

A morning routine Todos los días, yo me levanto a las 7:00. Voy al baño, me lavo la cara, y me afeito. Luego me visto y tomo un poco de desayuno. Por fin, me lavo los dientes. Did you remember to use a reflexive pronoun with levanto, lavo, afeito, and visto? Did you remember to change the stem for visto?

Let’s do another Juana ______ ( despertarse = e > ie) a las 6:30, ________ (levantarse), ______ (ir) al baño, y ________ (ducharse). Ella ______ (secarse), _______ (peinarse), y _______ (maquillarse) la cara. *maquillarse= to put on one’s make-up

Otra rutina diaria Juana se despierta a las 6:30, se levanta, va al baño, y se ducha. Ella se seca, se peina, y se pinta la cara. Did you remember to use a reflexive pronoun with despierta, levanta, ducha, seca, peina, and pinta? Did you remember to change the stem on despierta?

Quick reminder…. Quick reminder…. If you use certain two-part verb combinations, the reflexive verb can either before the first verb or can be attached to the second verb. Querer + levantarse –Quiero levantarme –Me quiero levantar –Quieres levantarte –Te quieres levantar –etc. Make sure that the reflexive pronoun agrees with the subject: yo = me, tú = te

Linking words- adverbios del orden  Primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo, etc.  Luego- later, then  Entonces- then  Después – then  Después de - after  Antes(de)- before  Por fin, por último, finalmente,al final- finally  Cuando- when  Pronto- soon

Whew! That’s a lot to remember! True! But keep in mind that the verb changes as it always does. You just have to remember to use the reflexive pronoun if you see an infinitive that ends in –se.
