¿Recuerdas que hay dos verbos que significan “to be”?  ¿Cómo eres?  Yo soy alta y guapa.  ¿Cómo estás?  Estoy bien, gracias.

What difference does it make?  Some things we say in Spanish require the use of the verb SER, and no other verb will do.  Time is a good example of this.  ¿Qué hora es?Son las tres.

A few simple rules help us to remember…  SER  D description  O occupation, origin  N nationality  T time  ESTAR  H health  Eemotion  L location  P present progressive

SER - D is for description  Physical Descriptions (can be of a person or a thing)  Yo soy alto.  La puerta es de madera. (what it is made of)  El libro es grande. (size)  La blusa es roja. (color)  El libro es un rectángulo.  Personality Traits  Yo soy inteligente.  Juan es gracioso.  Relationships  Yo soy la madre de Juan.  Religion  Yo soy católico.

SER  O is for occupation  Yo soy profesora.  Sr. Lopez es dentista.  Somos estudiantes.  N is for nationality  Ella es americana.  Ellos son mexicanos.

SER  T is for Time  Hoy es el cinco de octubre. (date)  Es el otoño. (season)  Son las tres de la tarde. (time)

We also use SER with impersonal expressions  Es posible. (que ella tiene un libro)  Es necesario estudiar.  Es imposible prestar atención.

ESTAR  H is for health  Yo estoy cansada.  Tú estás enfermo.  E is for emotion  Yo estoy triste. (sad)  Ella está contenta. (happy)
