Apuntes Gramaticales: Los verbos reflexivos Reflexive Verbs Reflexive Verbs: A verb is reflexive when the subject and the object are the same. Take a minute to write a brief definition of these terms in your own words. Use these two sentences as your guide: I washed the apple. What is the SUBJECT of the sentence? What is the OBJECT of the sentence? I washed my hands. What is the SUBJECT of the sentence? What is the OBJECT of the sentence?

Notice that a SUBJECT of a sentence is the person or thing that CREATES the ACTION. (For whom or for what the verb has been conjugated.) Notice that the OBJECT of a sentence is the person or thing that RECIEVES the ACTION. Reflexive verbs have the same subject and object. The second example (I wash my hands.) is an example of this. In Spanish, reflexive verbs in the infinitive ending look different. They are the verbs that end –SE. In reality, they are the same verbs (AR, ER, or IR) with an –SE attached to the end. The –SE serves as a reminder that the verb is reflexive.

You already know how to say “Wash the dishes” in Spanish. What is that verb in its infinitive form? LAVAR To say “wash oneself” (like washing your own hands), the infinitive looks the same, but then add an –SE to the end. LAVARSE To conjugate reflexive verbs, you must only know how to conjugate the verb in its AR, ER, or IR form and then ADD the REFLEXIVE PRONOUN in front of the conjugated verb. Then drop the –SE completely. Sound complicated? It’s not! In fact, you already know how to do it! You’ve been conjugating reflexive verbs since the beginning of your first year Spanish studies! Let me prove it to you……

How do you say: What’s your name? ¿Cómo te llamas? How do you say: His name is Juan. Se llama Juan. How do you say: How do you feel today? ¿Cómo te sientes hoy? Make sense? Here are the REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS: menos teos se Regular en el pretérito When you see this, know that the VERB is conjugated regularly in the preterit. However, you still need to add the above REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS before the conjugation.
