SER Y ESTAR SER Y ESTAR Ser and estar are two verbs that mean “to be”. These verbs have very distinctive uses and cannot be interchanged.

SER is used to express a trait or characteristic that does not change. Ej. Ella es muy sincera. El apartamento es muy alto. El apartamento es muy alto.

ESTAR is used to express a temporary condition or state. Ej. Marcia está muy enferma hoy. Mi hermana está nerviosa cuando sube al avion.

SER is used to express where someone or something is from,or his/her nationality or profession. Ej. La chica es de Cuba. El café es Colombiano. Juan es abogado.

ESTAR is used to express where someone or something is located. Ej. Los estudiantes están en la escuela. Los libros están en el estante.

SER is used in telling time. Ej. Son las diez y media. Es mediodía.

SER is used to tell about an event that is taking place. Ej. La fiesta es en la casa de los Garcia. El concierto es a las siete de la noche.

SER is used in mathematical equations. Ej. Dos y dos son cinco. ¡Qué ridículo! Son cuatro.

ESTAR is used to form the present progressive tense. Yo estoy escribiendo apuntes en la clase de español.

USING BOTH: Sometimes you can use both ser and estar, but you give a totally different meaning to the sentence.

These are some examples: La chica está fea en la foto, pero en realidad, no es fea. Es bonita.

Here is the other example: El profesor está aburrido hoy, pero por lo general, es interesante.
