Los artículos The article is an adjective. Therefore, it must agree in gender (masc/fem) and number (sing./pl.) with the word it is describing (modifying). Un pluma ≠ a pen (pen is fem. and must have a feminine article) La alumnas ≠ the students (students is plural and must have a plural article)
