36 Había también una profetisa, Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser. Era una mujer muy anciana. De joven, había vivido siete años casada 37 y tenía ya ochenta y cuatro años de edad. Luke 2:22 - 40 22 When the days were completed for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, 23 just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” 24 and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. 27 He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,

28 he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: 29 “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted 35 (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. 38 And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

39 When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. Gospel of the Lord

Today is the Feast of the Holy Family Today is the Feast of the Holy Family. The child Jesus is presented to God in the Temple, right after his circumcision. St. Luke stresses the fidelity of Mary and Joseph, as devout and pious Jews, to all the requirements of the Mosaic Law. Scholars tell us that at the same time, it is partly motivated by Luke’s desire to explain something about birth practices in Palestinian Judaism to predominantly Gentile readers (cf. Joseph A. Fitzmeyer’s work on this subject in his book “The Gospel According to Luke”, p. 421).

Two Israelite customs are involved Two Israelite customs are involved. The first was the consecration or presentation. Father Raymond E. Brown, in his book (“The Birth of the Messiah”, p. 447), reminds us that the consecration or presentation of the child to the Lord fulfilled Exodus 13:1 and 13:11 ff. It demanded the consecration of all firstborn males to the Lord.

This remembered the Lord’s sparing of the life of the Israelite firstborn when He slew the firstborn of the Egyptians. “The original idea was that the firstborn should then spend his life serving the Lord in a special way. But in fact the tribe of Levi eventually took over the special service of the Lord in cult and thus effectively replaced the firstborn.”

In the Book of Numbers 18:15-16 the firstborn was brought back from the service of the Lord for five shekels (twenty denarii), while the Levites remained in his service. This sum had to be paid at the sanctuary (the Temple). As far as we know there was no obligation (or custom) of bringing the child to the sanctuary for the presentation.

The second custom involved was the purification of the mother after the birth of a child. Leviticus 12:1ff says that a woman is ritually unclean for seven days before the circumcision of the male child and for thirty-three days after it. During this time, 40 days in all, she could not come to the sanctuary. Then, when the time came for her purification, (Leviticus 12:6) she is to bring to the priest the offering of a lamb, and a young pigeon or a dove. If she could not afford a lamb, two young pigeons or doves could be offered. This shows Our Lady’s humility She identifies with the poor.

El Libro de Levítico 12:1 ff dice que la mujer es ritualmente impura por siete días antes de la circuncisión del niño varón y por treinta y tres días después de eso. Later Christian theology added further reflections, such as Hebrews 10:5-7. “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire…. Then I said, ‘As it is written of me in the book, I have come to do your will, O God’ ” And Hebrews 2:14-18, notes that Jesus shared his flesh and blood with us so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life....

He could be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested though what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.” Jesus first sheds his blood at his circumcision, anticipating his sacrifice on the cross. That is why the word of God says: “By his stripes, we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Father Raymond Brown also notes that these canticles came out of a circle of Jewish Christian Anawim, the pious ones totally dependent on God who recognized in Jesus the long awaited fulfillment of God’s promises of help. They longed for consolation and received it when they received Jesus. Jesus in Matthew 11:25-27 praised God for having revealed this to little ones. “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes…”

Simeon (Greek for “Sign” or “Banner”), a prophet, appears on the scene Simeon (Greek for “Sign” or “Banner”), a prophet, appears on the scene. His credentials: he was righteous and devout, and awaited the consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him. He had a special revelation. He would not see death before he had seen Christ the Lord, the Messiah. When Jesus is presented at the Temple, he takes Jesus into his arms and blesses God: “Now you can let your servant go in peace; you word has been fulfilled; my own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples, a light of revelation to the nations, and a glory for your people Israel.” His prayer is read at all Catholic funerals.

Meanwhile, Our Lady and St Meanwhile, Our Lady and St. Joseph are amazed, full of wonder, reverence and awe. We know that Our Lady pondered all of these things in her heart (Luke 2:19). That means she had time for silent prayer and reflection on all that was happening. In the midst of this comes a prophecy: “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and the rise of many in Israel (not necessarily the same people). He will be a sign that is contradicted. This means he would meet with much opposition. The word of God transcends time and space. It applied to them then, and it applies to us now.

Mientras tanto, Nuestra Señora y San José están maravillados, atónitos, llenos de reverencia y acatamiento. Sabemos que Nuestra Señora guardaba todas estas cosas, meditándolas en su corazón (Lucas 2:19). Esto quiere decir que tomo tiempo para estar en oración, y en silencio, haciendo reflexión sobre todo lo que pasaba. En medio de esto viene la profecía: “He aquí, este niño es destinado para la caída y la levantada de muchos en Israel (no necesariamente la misma gente). Sera una señal que es contradecía. Tendrá mucha oposición. La palabra de Dios trasciende tiempo y espacio. Aplico entonces a ellos, y aplica a nosotros hasta este día.

The prophecy continues: “And you yourself a sword shall pierce (this becomes a lance in John 19:34, when a soldier pierces the heart of Jesus with a lance). Simeón personifies those who quietly live a life of solitude and prayer, waiting for the Lord to come. Those who accept Jesus will rise, Those who oppose him will fall. “Those who believe and are baptized shall be saved, those who do not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). The challenge now comes down to you and me. When you pick up your cross daily, that is the sign, the banner. It means you have accepted the call of Jesus “Pick up your cross and come follow me”.

La profecía continua: “Y tu misma una espada traspasará, (esto fue una lanza en Juan 19:34, cuando un soldado atraviesa el corazón de Jesús con una lanza.) Simeón personifica aquellos que viven su vida en soledad y en silencio y en oración, esperando la venida del Señor. Aquellos que aceptan a Jesús se levantaran. Aquellos que lo oponen, se caerán. “El que crea y se bautice, se salvará, el que no crea, se condenará” (Marcos 16:16). El desafío ahora viene a ti y a mí. Cuando levantes tu cruz diariamente, ese es la sena, el estandarte. Quiere decir que haz aceptado la llamada de Cristo Jesús: “Levanta tu cruz, y sígueme.”
