Stem Changing Verbs:

Regular verbs vs. Stem Changing Verbs Remind me…what do we do to conjugate a regular verb?  The root stays the same and the ending changes to match the subject. In a stem changing/boot verbs the endings still change to match the subject but there is also a change in the root/stem in some of the conjugations. In stem changing verbs all but the nosotros and vosotros forms have this change in the stem. The ones that have the change make up the form of a boot (hence the other name for stem changers -- boot verbs)

Present Tense Stem Changers There are 4 different kinds of stem changers:  (e:ie)  (o:ue)  (e:i)  (u:ue)

Steps to stem changing: 1. Figure out what kind of stem changer you have. 1. Cerrar (e:ie)  “e to ie” 2. Drop the ending and find the last of that kind of vowel IN THE ROOT. 1. Cerrar  cerr 3. Make the change happen. 1. Cerr  Cierr 4. Add on the needed ending you would normally use with that verb. 1. Cerrar  -ar endings (see conjugations on next slide)

Cerrar (e:ie) CierroCerramos CierrasCerráis CierraCierran CierraCierran
