Adjective Agreement

Well, the same is true of adjectives. You can’t use the exact same word to describe “mujer” that you use to describe “hombre.” Remember how you need to know if a noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural to know whether to use el or la or los or las? el hombre la mujer los hombres las mujeres

If an adjective ends in “o,” that’s the masculine singular: alto (tall) – hombre alto You have to change the “o” to “a” to make it feminine: alta – mujer alta “os” makes it masculine plural: hombres altos “as” makes it feminine plural: mujeres altas

Click here to go to a short practice.

Not all adjectives end in an –o. gris (gray) azul (blue) grande (big) Adjectives that DON’T end with an –o don’t get a masculine and feminine form. They get just singular and plural: el libro grislos libros grises la silla grislas sillas grises el libro grandelos libros grandes la silla grandelas sillas grandes Note that you make adjectives plural exactly the same way you make nouns plural: you add an –s if the word ends with a vowel and –es if it ends with a consonant.

To summarize: Adjectives that end with –o have four forms: -o alto -a alta -os altos -as altas Adjectives that end in any other vowel or a consonant have 2 forms: -V(owel) grande -Vs grandes -C(onsonant) fiel -Ces fieles

DON’T go sticking on the end of adjectives that end with a consonant: azul And don’t put or on the end of it either: azul Only can go on the end of a word ending with a consonant. a asos es

Remember also that the e that ends an adjective can’t change: verd And the only way to make it plural is to add an. No or ! verde osas e s

Now click here to go to a practice exercise that’s a little bit more challenging.

Oh—and one more not-so-hard but very important note: most descriptive adjectives come AFTER the noun they describe: libro rojo chicos altos flor amarilla So be sure to remember that, since it’s different from English.
