Reflections on John 16: Reflexiónes en Juan 16: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 31, 2009 Let us prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost by examining the words of Jesus as he prepared the Apostles. We will study the Fathers of the early Church to help us in our reflection and prayer.

Vamos a prepararnos para la venida del Espirito Santo en Pentecostés, examinando las palabras de Jesús cuando Él preparó a los Apóstoles. Vamos a estudiar a los Padres de la Iglesia primitiva para que nos ayuden en nuestra reflexión y oración.

Jesus tried to prepare his Apostles for his best teachings. He saved it for the last moments of his earthly life. It was to be about the mystery of God in himself. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #234 (CCC) teaches that it is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them.

Jesús preparó a los Apóstoles para la mejor de sus enseñanzas. La guardo para los últimos momentos de su vida terrenal. Se trataba del misterio de Dios en sí mismo. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (CIC) #234 enseña que es el misterio central de la vida y la fe Cristiana. Es la fuente de todos los otros misterios de la fe, la luz que los ilumina.

It is appropriate to cite (CCC) #242. “Following the apostolic tradition, the Church confessed at the first ecumenical council at Nicaea (325 A.D.), that the Son is “consubstantial” (of the same being) with the Father, i.e., one only God with him.

The Second Ecumenical Council, held at Constantinople (381 A.D.), kept this expression in the Nicene Creed and confessed “the only- begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father.” We express this belief when we say the Creed at Mass on Sunday.

He also intercedes on my behalf, saying to me things for which I cannot find the words…though I may fail to grasp the full meaning of the statement, I give it nonetheless the firm assent of my mind and heart… I may indeed show dullness and stupidity in my understanding of these spiritual matters.

Hilario de Poitiers (Sobre La Trinidad 12:55-57) lo dice muy bien. “El Espirito Santo plenamente entiende y penetra mis interiores más profundos. También intercede por mí, hablando de cosas por las cuales no encuentro palabras... aunque yo deje de entender completamente lo que dice, le doy sin embargo el apruebo firme de mí mente y de mí corazón... Quizás hasta muestre yo una incapacidad y estupidez en mi entendimiento de estas cosas espirituales.

Jesus said: “Do not be surprised if I have said to you: ‘You must be born again.’ Just as the wind blows where it pleases and you hear the sound of it without knowing where it is coming from or going to, so will it be with everyone who is born again of water and the Holy Spirit” (John 3:7-8).

So when I am reborn again in the Holy Spirit, I take a firm hold on something I do not understand. I am still ignorant of many things. “The Spirit abides by no rules. He speaks when he pleases, what he pleases, and where he pleases” (Hilary of Poitiers).

“De manera que cuando soy renacido otra vez en el Espíritu Santo, me agarro de algo que no entiendo. Estoy ignorante de muchas cosas. El Espíritu no sigue reglas. Habla cuando quiere, lo que quiere, y donde quiere” (Hilario de Poitiers).

Hilary continues by saying that just as it is not expedient for me to venture beyond my mental limitation and declare anything of Jesus other than what the chosen (apostles) tell us, so it is not fitting for me to go beyond the power of human thought in what I say about the Holy Spirit.

Hilario continua diciendo que así como no es propio para mí aventurar mas allá de mis limitaciones mentales y declarar cualquier cosa de Jesús aparte de lo que los escogidos (apóstoles) nos dijeron, así no es propio para mí ir mas allá del poder del pensamiento humano en lo que digo del Espíritu Santo.

“Rather than waste time in a fruitless war of words, I (Hilary) would prefer to spend it in the firm profession of an unhesitating faith.” In other words, simply trust in the Holy Spirit to teach you all things you need to know for salvation at each moment of your life, as you are able to bear it.

“En vez de gastar tiempo en una guerra de palabras que no tienen cuenta, yo (Hilario) prefiero pasar el tiempo en una profesión firme de una fe que no vacila.” En otras palabras, simplemente confío en que el Espíritu Santo me enseñe todo lo que necesite saber para la salvación a cada momento de mi vida, tal como pueda aguantarlo.

Bede (Homilies on the Gospels 2.11), says that it is true that a countless number of the faithful have foreknown and proclaimed coming events as a result of the gift of the Holy Spirit. There are some who, filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, cure the sick, raise the dead, command demons and shine forth with many virtues.

Bede (Homilías Acerca del Evangelio 2.11), dice que es cierto que un numero incontable de los fieles han conocido antemano y proclamado acontecimientos que han de venir por resultado del don del Espíritu Santo. They lead an angelic life on earth. (Needless to say, this is a call for holiness.) He announces to us “the things that are to come” when he draws us away from the delight of present things and kindles within us the desire for the kingdom that has been promised us in heaven.

For when he says, “All things that the Father has are mine, therefore I said that he shall receive of mine”… He shows here that these things are received from him because all things the Father has are the Son’s, but also they are received from the Father… This unity has no diversity, nor does it matter from whom the thing is received, since that which is given by the Father is counted also as given by the Son.”

Porque cuando dice “Todo lo que Él Padre tiene es mío, entonces Yo dije que Él recibirá de lo mío”... Él muestra aquí que estas cosas son recibidas del Padre... Esta unidad no tiene diversidad, ni tampoco importa de quien es recibido, siendo que lo que es dado por el Padre se cuenta como dado por el Hijo.”

If this sounds complicated, fear not. Relax. God will give you understanding as you need it, as you can bear it. Suffice it to trust in him, be faithful. Remain true to him. He knows the right time and he knows what your needs are. Our God is a mighty God! He knows what he is doing.

Si esto te parece complicado, no temas. Dios te concederá entendimiento según lo necesites, cuando lo puedas aguantar. Suficiente es que confíes en Él, y que seas fiel a Él. Él sabe el tiempo propio y sabe lo que son tus necesidades. ¡Nuestro Dios es maravilloso! Él sabe lo que esta haciendo.

Prepare for a special revelation this Pentecost. God wants you to renew your relationship with the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Of course. All I know is that God is love, and he loves me, and he will look out for me, with loving care. Let go and let God! Let God be God! Alleluia! Amen! Forever, and ever! Glory! Joy! Come, Holy Spirit!
