Physical Descriptions
Short – Bajo Tall - Alto *Just like with personality descriptions, adjectives in Spanish must match the gender of the noun. Ex. El chico es alto. Ella es baja.
Heavy – Gordo Thin - Delgado *Adjectives should also match the “number” of the noun – singular or plural. Ex. Los chicos gordos.
Pretty – Bonito, Lindo Handsome – Guapo Ugly - Feo
Old – Viejo Young - Jóven
Black hair - Pelo negro Brown hair - Pelo moreno (brunette) *To talk about hair color and eye color, use the verb “tener.” Yo tengo pelo moreno. I have brown hair. Ella tiene pelo negro. She has black hair.
Blonde - Rubio Redhead - Pelirrojo *With redhead and blonde, you use the verb “ser.” Yo soy rubia. I am blonde. (female) Yo soy pelirrojo. I am redheaded. (male) Lindsay Lohan es pelirroja. Lindsay Lohan is redheaded.
Long hair - Pelo largo Short hair - Pelo corto
Bald - Calvo *Always use the verb “ser”! Él es calvo. Dr. Phil es calvo.
Hazel eyes - Ojos castaños Green eyes - Ojos verdes Tienes ojos castaños? Do you have hazel eyes? Tengo ojos verdes. I have green eyes.
Brown eyes - Ojos cafes Blue eyes - Ojos azules Yo tengo ojos cafes. I have brown eyes. Él tiene ojos azules. He has blue eyes.
La cara – Face *Una cara bonita – A pretty face. *Ella tiene una cara bonita – She has a pretty face.
Large – Grande Small – Pequeño Medium - Mediano
La nariz – Nose * Él tiene una nariz grande. He has a big nose.
La boca – Mouth * Él tiene una boca grande. He has a big mouth.
Las orejas – Ears * Él tiene orejas pequeñas. He has small ears
Las gafas – Eyeglasses * Él tiene gafas. He has glasses.
El bigote – Mustache * Él tiene un bigote grande. He has a big mustache.
La barba – Beard * Él tiene un bigote largo. He has a long beard.
Grammar Focus… In Spanish, note that the ADJECTIVE always comes AFTER the NOUN. PELO LARGO Noun (Hair) Adjective (long) El chico guapo le gusta bailar.
Grammar Focus… As we learned with personality, the noun and verb also have to agree in gender. Remember, that doesn’t always mean the gender of the PERSON. It’s the gender of the NOUN. Rhianna tiene PELO CORTO Noun (masc.) Adjective (masc.) Ella es una chica bonita.
Grammar Focus… The NOUN and ADJECTIVE also must agree in number. That means if the noun is plural, the adjective must be too. Rhianna tiene ojos cafes. Noun (plural) Adjective (plural)
