Chapter 7 Grammar I Reflexive Verbs (Verbs with Reflexive Pronouns) Stem-Changing Verbs Using Infinitive

Verbs with Reflexive Pronouns If the subject and object of the verb are the same, a reflexive pronoun can be used. The reflexive pronoun shows that the subject acts upon itself. When you conjugate a verb like lavarse, the endings of the verbs are the same. The only difference is that you include the reflexive pronoun that agrees with the subject. The reflexive pronouns are: ME NOS TE OS SE

Verbs with Reflexive Pronouns Lavarse-To wash I wash (Yo) me lavo We wash (Nosotros) nos lavamos You wash (Tú) te lavas (Vosotros) os laváis Usted se lava Ustedes se lavan He washes Él se lava They wash Ellos se lavan She washes Ella se lava

Verbs with Reflexive Pronouns Verbs can be used with reflexive pronouns that refer to the subject or with direct objects that are different from the subject. Reflexive verb referring to the subject: Juan se acuesta. Juan goes to bed. Different from the subject: Juan acuesta a los niños. Juan puts the children to bed.

Verbs with Reflexive Pronouns Here are some more common verbs used with reflexive pronouns: Afeitarse Bañarse Despertarse(e to ie) Entrenarse Estirarse Levantarse Mantenerse (e to ie) Maquillarse Peinarse Ponerse Prepararse Quitarse Relajarse Secarse Vestirse (e to i)

Reflexive verbs with Infinitives Reflexive pronouns can go before a conjugated verb or can be joined to the end of an infinitive. The meaning of the statement or question does not change. Yo no quiero afeitarme hoy. = Yo no me quiero afeitar hoy. (I don’t want to shave today) After reflexive verbs, use el, la, los or las with parts of the body or clothing. (Yo) Me voy a lavar la cara. I’m going to wash my face. (Yo) Voy a lavarme la cara.

Using Infinitives To say what someone just did, use the present tense of acabar de followed by an infinitive. Acabo de lavar el carro. I just washed my car. Los niños acaban de acostarse. The children just went to bed. Other verbs commonly followed by infinitives are: Ir: Voy a relajarme. Querer: Quiero relajarme Tener que: Tengo que relajarme. Tener ganas de: Tengo ganas de relajarme. Deber: Debo relajarme.

Tengo que levantarme temprano para levantar pesas con Ana en el gimnasio. I have to get up early (in order) to lift weights with Ana in the gym.
