4 En cumplimiento de esto, apareció en el desierto Juan el Bautista predicando un bautismo de conversión, para el perdón de los pecados. 5 A él acudían de toda la comarca de Judea y muchos habitantes de Jerusalén; reconocían sus pecados y él los bautizaba en el Jordán. 6 Juan usaba un vestido de pelo de camello, ceñido con un cinturón de cuero y se alimentaba de saltamontes y miel silvestre.

7 Proclamaba: “Ya viene detrás de mí uno que es más poderoso que yo, uno ante quien no merezco ni siquiera inclinarme para desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. 8 Yo los he bautizado a ustedes con agua, pero él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo.” Palabra del Señor

Mark 1:1 - 8 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. 3 A voice of one crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’ ”

4 John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. 6 John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey.

7 And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the holy Spirit.” Gospel of the Lord

Dec. 7, 2014 Today is the Second Sunday of Advent. The first reading of the Mass is from Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11. Written towards the end of the Exile, the Lord wanted to comfort his people, who had gone through 70 years of a very hard time. It had been a time of purification. Now they had to get ready for something new. The prophet was to proclaim that good times were coming. God was coming to save them! He was coming like a good shepherd to take care of his flock. This proclamation transcends time and space. It applies at all times, for all those having a hard time, and who look forward to better times.

Escrito hacia el final del Exilio, el Señor quiso consolar a su Pueblo, que había pasado por 70 años de tiempos muy difíciles. Había sido un tiempo de purificación. Ahora tenía que estar listo para algo nuevo. El profeta fue a proclamar que los buenos tiempos venían. ¡Díos iba a venir a salvarlos! Venía como un Buen Pastor para cuidar su rebaño. Esta proclamación trasciende el tiempo y el espacio. Se aplica en todo momento, para todos aquellos que tienen un tiempo difícil, y que esperan tiempos mejores.

In beautiful poetry, the Word of God spoke: “Kindness and truth shall meet, justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase.” Therefore they were to prepare the way of his steps. Put the word out. We must not loose the sense of urgency. We need to do this again. That’s what we are to do in Advent. Right?

It will be a cataclysmic event. “The heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and be dissolved by fire.” Therefore, the best thing to do is to be prepared: “Be eager to be found without spot or blemish before the Lord.” The Lord will not delay. St. Peter was trying to keep the people on their toes spiritually, lest they fall asleep. To put all this in context, remember in those days modern means of communication were not around. No TV, no radios, no computers, no cell phones with emergency call numbers!

San Pedro estaba tratando de mantener a la gente en estado de alerta espiritualmente, para que no se durmieran. Para poner todo esto en contexto, recordar que en esos días los medios de comunicación modernos no existían. ¡No habia televisión, ni radios, ni computadoras, ni teléfonos celulares con números de llamada de emergencia!

Then comes the Gospel of Mark. He was the first of the four evangelists. It was written around twenty years after Christ died. Remember Jesus had asked the apostles to go to the whole world, and preach the Gospel (Matthew 28). St. Peter was the leader, St Mark is believed to communicate what he wanted. They had a huge job to do. As the first generation of Christians began to die out, they began to realize it was a good idea to write things down. They remembered the most important events in the life of Christ. First was the appearance of John the Baptist. That was the beginning.

And we are writing this that our joy may be complete.”

Isaiah 40:3 urged God’s people to “Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” And in verse 9 he says: “Go up unto a high mountain and cry out at the top of your voice: ‘Here is your God!’ Here comes with power the Lord God, who rules by his strong arm; here is his reward with him, his recompense before him.” John the Baptist did just that: he appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And the people heard and came out of Jerusalem to be baptized in the River Jordan as they acknowledged their sins.

Isaías 40:3 instruyó al pueblo de Dios a “Preparad el camino del Señor en el desierto, enderezad calzada en la soledad a nuestro Dios.” Y en el versículo 9 dice: “Sube a un monte alto y gritar en voz alta: ‘¡Aquí está vuestro Dios!’ Aquí viene con poder el Señor Dios, que gobierna por su fuerte brazo; aquí es su recompensa con él, su obra delante de él”. Juan el Bautista hizo eso precisamente: apareció en el desierto predicando el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de los pecados. Y el pueblo oyó y salieron de Jerusalén para ser bautizados en el Río Jordán reconociendo sus pecados.

Once again, we need to proclaim in our desert, that God is near, that we need to prepare the way of the Lord. Do it by word of mouth, by writing, by computer, by radio, by TV, by any way that is within our reach. A popular song says: “Go shout it in the mountain! He will bring justice. He will bring love. He will bring happiness, He will bring peace!” Yes, He will bring us all that and eternal salvation too. Jesus Christ the Lord is near. Pray that He will baptize us with the Holy Spirit!

Una vez más, tenemos que proclamar en nuestro desierto, que Dios está cerca, que necesitamos preparar el camino del Señor. Háganlo por palabra de boca, por escrito, por computadora, por radio, por televisión, por cualquier medio que está a nuestro alcance. Jesucristo, el Señor está cerca. Un canto popular dice: “¡Vayan y grítenlo en la montaña! Él nos traerá justicia. Él nos traerá amor. Él nos traerá felicidad. Él nos traerá paz”. Si, nos traerá todo eso y la salvación eterna también. Oren para que Él nos bautice con el Espíritu Santo!
