Enrique y Raúl Even though Enrique and Raúl have different interests, they are still good friends. They also share a love of books. They like to discuss their favorite kinds of books, and the new books they just got. Enrique Raúl

Enrique Raúl Enrique: Hola, Raúl. Raúl: Hola, Enrique. Me gusta el libro nuevo. Enrique: ¿Sí? ¿Te gusta el libro nuevo? Raúl: ¡Claro que sí! Es fantástico. Enrique: Me gustan más los libros del fútbol y el tenís. Raúl: Me gustan más los libros de la acción y la fantasía.

Gustar – to like Gustar is a weird verb in Spanish. It LITERALLY means “to be pleasing to.” Of course in English, we translate that as “to like.” How do we write the verb “gustar”?

What if I want to say I like something… but not THE something? Do I still have to include el / la / los / las before the noun? YES YOU DO!!! With “gustar”, you ALWAYS leave the definite article in front of the noun! This means you like something in a general category.

What if you DON’T like something? Easy! Just add “no” to the beginning! No me gusta el helado. (I don’t like ice cream.) No me gustan las películas de misterio. (I don’t like mystery movies.)

(It’s all the same to me.) Also… What if you don’t really like or dislike something? You can say: Me da igual. (It’s all the same to me.) What if you like something a lot? Me gusta mucho. (I like it a lot.)

Finally… How can you know who you are talking about when you see “Le gusta” ??? Is it talking about “él” or “ella”??? HOW DO YOU KNOW!?!?
