IR+A+INFINITIVE in the past 1. ir+a+infinitive when talking about what somone was going to do = imperfect POR EJEMPLO: Él iba a estudiar para el examen. (He was going to study for the exam.)

IR+A+INFINITIVE in the past 2. ir+a+infinitive is followed by a second verb that describes a specific completed action, is preterite tense. POR EJEMPLO: Mis padres iban a ver la película, pero llegaron tarde. Mis padres iban a ver la película, pero llegaron tarde. (My parents were going to see the movie, but they arrived late.)

IR+A+INFINITIVE in the past 3. ir+a+infinitive is followed by another verb in the imperfect when the second verb describes a condition or an ongoing state in the past. POR EJEMPLO: Nosotros íbamos a jugar al fútbol, pero teníamos mucha tarea. (We were going to play soccer, but we had too much homework.)
