Conocer = to know a person, or to be acquainted or thoroughly familiar with a person or thing
The Personal a In Spanish, when the direct object (the recipient of the action of verb-what/who???) refers to a person, you must place the personal a immediately before the DO. There is no equivalent in English. EX: Quiero a Rosa./ I love Rosa. Veo a Juan y a Julio./ I Juan and Julio.
