In order to ask the time in Spanish you need to say: ¿Qué hora es? index

When you tell time in Spanish you will use the verb ser. Note that you use es when it is one’clock and son when it is any other number. It is one o’clock Es la una. It is two o’clock Son las dos. It is three o’clock Son las tres. index

The clock is divided into two parts index

If the minute hand is past 12 but before the six you must use y to add the minutes. Y Son las tres y cinco. index

If the minute hand is past 12 but before the six you must use y to add the minutes. y Son las tres y veinte. index

If the minute hand is past 12 but before the six you must use y to add the minutes. y Son las tres y media. index

If the minute hand is past six but before the twelve you must use menos. menos Son las tres menos cuarto. index

Now try to see if you can tell the time: Es la una menos una. index

To sum it up… Add minutes with the word “y” when the big hand is on the right hand side of the clock! Subtract minutes from the hour that you are approaching by using “menos” when the big hand is on the left side of the clock! Use Es la between 12:31 and 1:30. Use Son las to say what time it is for all others

¿A qué hora es…? At what time…

To express at what time something is happening… Use “a la” between 12:31 and 1:30. –¿A qué hora es tu clase de arte? Tengo el arte a la una y cinco.

Expressing At what time… Use a las for all other times. Ana tiene almuerzo a las once y media. Tenemos la clase de ciencias a las dos y cuarto.
