What’s the difference? A good image to have in mind when working with para is an arrow: Like an arrow, para, goes ahead, away from its origin toward its destination, usually in a direct, straight route. A good acronym for remembering para would be: P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

Use para when talking about: Purpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive. Effect that something has on something else. Recipient Future dates, deadlines, or events Employment Comparison Toward a specific place

Purpose Purpose: When describing what something does, or what it is for, we use para + infinitive. Para translates as “for” or “ in order to” Una pluma es para escribir Estos zapatos son para correr

Comparison Comparison: When something or someone goes outside of the norm or beyond what is expected, and we make a comparison, we use para to draw attention to the distinction. Para in these cases translates as “for” Para un niño de cinco años, lee y escribe muy bien.

What about ‘por’? Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.E.R.F.E.C.T. does not apply. However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: I. A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D This acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.

What’s the difference? Like a balance scale, por is the great equalizer. When dealing with por, you can often feel the balance on both sides of the term. A good acronym for remembering por would be: I. A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D.
