When the verb of the main clause of a sentence expresses an emotion or feeling such as: hope fear joy pity or surprise then the subjunctive is required in the subordinate clause of the sentence.

Now pay close attention: The indicative is used in a subordinate clause when there is no doubt or uncertainty in the main clause. Check out this list of expressions of certainty. It’s obvious that Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Galuszka are Beyoncé fans.

The verb creer: In affirmative sentences the verb creer expresses certainty or belief, so it is followed by the indicative. The verb creer: In negative sentences, when doubt is implied, creer is followed by the subjunctive. No creo que haya soluciones para todos los problemas del mundo. I do not believe that there are solutions for all of the world’s problems. Creo que debemos reciclar. I believe that we should recycle. The expressions quizás and tal vez are normally followed by the subjunctive because they imply doubt about something. Quizás haga sol mañana. Perhaps it will be sunny tomorrow. Tal vez veamos la luna esta noche. Maybe we will see the moon tonight.
