Part 1: Present Tense

Stem changes: Review In the present tense, stem-changing verbs have a stem change in the yo, tú, él/ella/usted, and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms. The nosotros form does not have a stem change. This creates a “boot” shape in the verb chart. Yo Nosotros Tú X Él/Ella, Usted Ellos/Ellas, Ustedes

Stem changes: -ir verbs MOST stem changing -ir verbs with an “e” in the stem have an EI stem change in the present tense. Decir, pedir, servir, repetir, freír, seguir, vestirse. Exceptions (EIE): Preferir: yo prefiero Divertirse: yo me divierto There are also -ir verbs with an OUE stem change in the present tense: Dormir/Dormirse Morir

These verbs are slightly extra irregular. One more thing… For ALL stem-changing -ir verbs (even the EIE verbs), there is an EI or OU stem change in the “ing” form (present participle). Pedir: estoy pidiendo Servir: estoy sirviendo Preferir: estoy prefiriendo Dormir: estoy durmiendo Morir: estoy muriendo

Preterite: Review Remember the verb endings for -ir verbs in the preterite Yo: -í Nosotros: -imos Tú: -iste X Él/Ella, Usted: -ió Ellos/Ellas, Ustedes: -ieron
