¿Por o Para?

Por vs. Para Both por and para are prepositions. They both mean for, but they are used in different ways.

Use Por to indicate… Length of time or distance (duration) Ex. Estuvieron discutiendo por una hora. They argued for one hour. Ex. Trabajé por cinco horas ayer. I worked for five hours yesterday.

Use Por to indicate… Reason (because of) Ex. Se pelearon por un programa de televisión. They fought over a TV program. Ex. No pude ir a la fiesta por estudiar toda la noche. I couldn’t go to the party because of studying all night.

Use Por to indicate… Emotion Ex. Se enoja por estudiar mucho. She gets mad for having to study a lot.

Use Por to indicate… An exchange Ex. Cambiamos la silla vieja por una nueva. We changed the old chair for a new one. Ex. Carlos me dio unos bloques por mi cuerda. Carlos gave me some blocks for my rope.

Use Por to indicate… Means of communication Ex. Ayer hablé con Ana por teléfono. Yesterday I spoke with Ana on the phone.

Use Por to indicate… The place where an action takes place (movement) Ex. Ayer caminamos por el parque. Yesterday we walked through the park. Ex. Me gusta correr por la casa de mis abuelos. I like to run through my grandparents’ house.

Use Por to indicate… Substitution or action on one’s behalf Ex. Los padres hacen mucho por sus hijos. Parents do a lot for their kids. Ex. En el concierto, Sra. Thomas y Sra. Galuszka cantaron por Beyoncé. At the concert, Sra. Thomas and Sra. Galuszka sang for Beyoncé. (Because Beyoncé couldn’t sing that night.)

Use Por to indicate… Motive Ex. Fui al supermercado por leche. I went to the store for milk.

Use para to indicate… Recipient of an action Ex. Esa falda es para mi madre. That skirt is for my mother.

Use para to indicate… Destination Ex. En unos minutos nos vamos para la playa. In a few minutes, we are going to the beach. Ex. Salimos a las ocho para el aeropuerto. We leave at 8:00 for the airport.

Use para to indicate… A point in time, deadline Ex. Debemos terminar el trabajo para el lunes. We should finish the work for Monday.

Use para to indicate… Comparing to a standard Ex. Para un teléfono antiguo, funciona bien. For an old phone, it works well.
