El Subjuntivo Expressions of Doubt

In the same way that the subjunctive is used with impersonal expressions and to communicate a desire to influence someone else’s actions, it is also used after: verbs and expressions of doubt, denial, disbelief or uncertainty.

subject and verb in the subjunctive + que + expression of DDD/ uncertainty + que +

DDD (doubt, denial, desbelief) Expression of DDD/ uncertainty  subjunctive after the “que”

Expressions of doubt uncertainty, denial dudar - to doubt negar (eie) - to deny no creer que- to not believe no estar seguro(a) de - to be unsure

Expressions of doubt uncertainty, denial no es cierto -it is not certain no es verdad -it is not true es dudoso -it’s doubtful (no) es imposible (no) es posible (no) es probable

However, when some of these expressions change from positive to negative or negative to positive you may no longer have the presence of doubt, denial , disbelief or uncertainty and will use the present tense. all verbs in a statement of fact , belief or certainty are in the indicative Belief/Fact Use the present tense instead after the “que”.

¿Es verdad que tengamos un examen hoy? Sí, es verdad que tenemos… Also, any tie you are asking a question, the subjunctive will always be used because there is subjunctive involved. ¿Es verdad que tengamos un examen hoy? Sí, es verdad que tenemos… No, no es verdad que tengamos…

dudar negar no creer no estar seguro de no es cierto no es verdad Followed by subjunctive Followed by indicative dudar negar no creer no estar seguro de no es cierto no es verdad es dudoso (no) es posible (no) es imposible no dudar no negar creer estar seguro de es cierto es verdad no es dudoso saber

Examples using impersonal expressions Dudo que Paco saque buenas notas. (presence of doubt) No dudo que Paco saca buenas notas. (no doubt) No es cierto que Ana vaya a la fiesta. (uncertainty, disbelief) Es cierto que Ana va a la fiesta. (certainty, belief)
