Preterite v. Imperfect

Preterite A verb tense in which actions are done and over – never to be repeated. Once the action is done, it is not to be repeated!

Preterite examples Yo estudié por el examen en historia. Nosotros vimos a 311 el año pasado. Ellos dieron las presentaciónes ayer. Tú hablaste con el presidente anteayer. Ella se cepilló el pelo anoche.

Imperfect A verb tense to describe events which happen in the past that deal with PWATER.

Imperfect - P Ella era alta y él era bajo. Yo era bonita y joven. P = physical descriptions or attributes Ella era alta y él era bajo. Yo era bonita y joven. Tú eras gordito.

Imperfect - W Hacía sol ayer. Llovía mucho en abril. W= weather Hacía sol ayer. Llovía mucho en abril. No nevaba en noviembre mucho.

Imperfect - A Ellos tenían siete años el año pasado. A = age (chronological) Ellos tenían siete años el año pasado. Yo tenía diez años cuando yo compré mi propia bicicleta. Nosotros teníamos un año cuando Nosotros tomamos lecciónes de natación.

Imperfect - T Era a la una anoche. Eran las siete de la mañana. T = time (numbers) Era a la una anoche. Eran las siete de la mañana. Eran las dos menos tres de la tarde.

Imperfect - E Yo estaba contento. Ellos estaban enojados. E = emotions Yo estaba contento. Ellos estaban enojados. Tú estabas preocupado anoche.

Imperfect - R Él asistía a la escuela todos los días. R= reoccurring actions / repeating actions/ actions interrupted Él asistía a la escuela todos los días. Yo comía al mediodía cada almuerzo. Yo lavaba los platos cuando tú me llamaste por teléfono.
