The “castells” are human towers that are generally erected annually in cities and towns in Cataluña, Spain by groups of fans that maintain this custom.
Traditionally, "castells" are raised in the square in front of the main balcony of the town hall.
Standing on top of each other's shoulders, the "castellers" (human towers) are six to ten levels high. The "tronc" of the tower, which consists of the levels that rise from the second level, is composed of approximately five extremely robust men on which girls or sleeker young men climb.
The “pom de dalt,” which consists of the top three levels, is formed by boys and girls. Any of the people present can participate in the formation of the "pinya" which is a human mass that forms the base of the tower.
Groups of "castellers" are distinguished by their clothing, and more specifically by the color of their shirts.
The broad belt that is used to protect their back also serves as a fulcrum for those who will climb to the upper floors of the tower.
Before and after the "castell" is formed, the musicians perform several folk melodies with a type of flute or wind instrument called a "gralla" which also accompanies the pace of construction of the tower as it goes up.
The technique of forming the "castells" is traditionally passed down from generation to generation within groups and is acquired only through practice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VF0b2oLsvA
