California’s System of Higher Education There are 4 major systems that provide higher education for California students There is the University of California system often referred to simply as “UC” – UCLA and UC Irvine are two of the UC campuses closest to the LA area. There is the California State University system also known as “CSU” – Cal State LA, CSU Long Beach, and Cal State Dominguez Hills are all part of the CSU system. There are the California Community Colleges which many people call “junior” colleges. There are many community colleges in the L.A. area: Long Beach City College, El Camino College, Los Angeles Harbor College and Cerritos College are just a few of them. And there are the independent (not-for-profit) California colleges and universities which is a long name for private schools – Loyola Marymount University and the University of Southern California which is located in downtown Los Angeles are two examples of independent schools in the Los Angeles area. How are the they different? Let’s start with the UC system.... Los Angeles Harbor College

STANISLAUS EAST BAY POMONA SAN DIEGO HUMBOLDT CSU campuses provide student-focused undergraduate and graduate degrees. They are also well-known for preparing teachers for California schools. And students also have access to doctorate degrees through programs offered jointly with the University of California or other universities. The CSU also has doctorate program in Education. In total the CSU offers over 1,800 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. In California’s Master Plan for higher education the California State University system is intended to select from among the top one-third (33.3%) of the high school graduating class. For admission as an upper division transfer student, priority is given to students transferring from California community colleges. SONOMA CHICO SAN MARCOS SACRAMENTO SAN JOSE

Escuelas Privadas Another option for California students is to choose from among the many independent or private colleges located in California. There are more than 75 not-for-profit colleges and universities in California. That includes: 32 liberal arts colleges 19 comprehensive universities, and 5 major research universities Students can also select from: Faith affiliated colleges, Women’s Colleges, or Specialized colleges (focusing on subject-areas like engineering or art or music)

Mas que 100 colegios en el estado The California Community Colleges make up the largest college system in the world. They are organized in a way intended to make them available to just about every potential student in the state. 112 campuses are located in big cities, small towns, along the coast, and in the mountains, in the valley and in the desert.
