PRETERITE TENSE OF IR We already know that the verb “IR” means to go. In the preterite (past) tense, we use this verb to describe where we went. Unlike regular verbs in the preterite, the forms of “IR” have no accents. This is an IRREGULAR VERB and its forms must be MEMORIZED

Preterite of IR The preterite tense of IR is the same as the preterite of SER (to be). The context makes the meaning clear.
Preterite of IR/SER José fue a Costa Rica. José went to Costa Rica. El viaje fue un desastre. The trip was a disaster.

Preterite of IR The “I” form ends in –i (fui). The “he” and “she” forms end in –e (fue).
Preterite of HACER, DAR and VER These verbs are also all irregular in the past tense and you must memorize these verb forms. Remember, they have NO accents!

Preterite of VER Vimos mucho arte interesante en el museo. We saw a lot of interesting art in the museum. La semana pasada vi un accidente terrible. Last week I saw a terrible accident.
