Introduction to regular verbs the verb ser is called an “irregular verb” because you have to memorize a new spelling for each form of the verb now you will learn how to conjugate “regular verbs” that end in –ar these verbs are easy to learn because you can simply drop the –ar ending and add a new ending for each form

Important Definitions To conjugate a verb means to take its infinitive and change it to establish correct subject-verb agreement. Usually, this means removing the original ending, (-ar, -er or –ir) from the infinitive and attaching a new ending. This is equivalent to changing “to walk” in English to “she walks”.

Important Definitions The part of the infinitive remaining after removing the original ending is called the verb stem. For example, estudiar means “to study”. Its verb stem is estudi-.

Present Tense Verbs The present tense in Spanish is equivalent to the present tense in English, although it has only a one word translation. In English, the present tense is translated by: 1) verb meaning, 2) is, am, are + verb + -ing, or 3) do/does + verb. However, all of these are just a one word/verb translation in Spanish. In other words, I speak, I do speak, and I am speaking can all be expressed by the same word, hablo.

estar—to be Both ser and estar translate to “to be” in English However, they are used very differently in Spanish

ser v. estar use forms of the verb ser to describe permanent conditions of someone, like personality, looks, or origin. Yo soy inteligente. Ellos son de Mexico. use forms of the verb estar for location or temporary conditions Yo estoy en la clase. Ella está en el baño. Nosotros estamos bien. Felipe está mal hoy.

estar—to be (location or temporary) Both ser and estar are irregular verbs. You cannot just add regular –ar endings to the stem of estar, though it is similar. Copy and memorize the following chart for the forms of estar:
