Regular Present tense Verbs Conjugating –ar, -er, -ir verbs

What is an ‘infinitive’? An infinitive form of a verb is the verb in its purest form (meaning without being conjugated or altered in any way). All verbs in English that have the word “to” in front of the verb such as “to run”, “to jump”, “to eat” are in it’s infinitive form. Verbs in Spanish that are in it’s infinitive end in either –ar, -er or –ir. The -ar, -er or -ir is the equivalent to the English word “to” in front of the verbs.

What does ‘conjugate’ mean? When we speak, the verb changes to match whoever is doing the action. For example, we do not say ‘she to walk to the store’, we say ‘she walks to the store’. These changes within the verb are called conjugations. In Spanish, just like in English, each verb will conjugate to match the subject doing the action.

Regular -ar verbs -ar verbs are simply verbs that end in –ar Examples: Abrazar, besar, comprar, arreglar To conjugate these verbs, remove the –ar and add the appropriate ending. The ending has to match the person that is being discussed (1st person, 2nd person, etc…)
