El pretérito y el imperfecto
You choose to use el pretérito or el imperfecto depending upon whether you are referring to an action that was done once and completed in the past OR an action that was continuous and recurring in the past.
El pretérito El pretérito is used to describe an action that began and ended at a SPECIFIC time in the past. The action is a one-time occurrence.
El imperfecto El imperfecto is used to describe continuous, habitual, or repeated past action. Beginning or ending times are not necessarily important. El imperfecto is used for past description, weather, time.
Ellos iban al cine todos los días. El imperfecto El pretérito Ellos iban al cine todos los días. Siempre se sentaban en la primera fila. Todas las noches se acostaban tarde. Yo trabajaba en la consulta del médico. Cada verano compraba Elena un traje de baño nuevo. Ellos fueron al cine el sábado pasado. Ayer se sentaron en la última fila. Anoche se acostaron temprano. Ayer yo trabajé en casa. Esta mañana compró 2 trajes de baño nuevos.
Using both tenses at the same time. When a sentence has 2 or more verbs in the past tense, both el pretérito or el imperfecto may be used. Each situation must be determined individually. Ana llegó ayer y Paco la vio. Durante los inviernos iba Adela a las montañas a esquiar, pero yo trabajaba. Yo estudiaba cuando mi hermanita entró en mi cuarto.
Verbs involving mental activities or conditions Verbs that refer to mental activities or conditions almost always use el imperfecto. The most common of these verbs are creer pensar desear preferir querer* poder tener ganas de saber
