Los Pronombres Personales (Subject Pronouns) Singular yo tú él / ella / Ud. Plural nosotros vosotros * ellos / ellas / Uds. * only used in certain parts of Spain

Infinitives (unconjugated verbs) have a stem and an ending. no subject

the stem tells the action the ending tells the type of verb it is.

There are three types or classes of verbs as determined by the infinitive ending. -ir Today, we will work only with the –ar verbs.

hablar = to speak or talk While the ending tells what type of verb it is, the stem gives the meaning of the verb. hablar = to speak or talk habl- comer = to eat com- vivir = to live viv-

Every verb has 2 parts: STEM + ENDING Hablar = habl- Practicar = practi- Estudiar = estudi- Trabajar = trabaj- Cocinar = cocin- Mirar = mir- Escuchar = escuch- Jugar = jug- Presentar = present- Comprar = compr- + AR

To conjugate regular verbs, we change the endings on the regular stem. Remove the –ar and then add the appropriate ending for the subject you want to express.

-ar endings are -o -as -a -amos -áis -an

To form the present tense: STEM + Verb ending -o -as -a -amos -áis -an

To conjugate hablar, we drop the -ar and substitute the endings To conjugate hablar, we drop the -ar and substitute the endings. The stress is on the next to last syllable.

habl ar To speak, talk habl o as a amos áis an

estudi ar To study estudi o as a amos áis an
