-ER  Anoche, comí el bistec.  Last night I ate the beef.  Ellos perdieron su tarea.  They lost their homework.  Nosotros no entendimos la tarea.  We didn’t understand the homework. -IR  Mi amigo escribió el cuento.  My friend wrote the story.  Tú recibiste un regalo para la Navidad.  You received a present for Christmas.  Vosotros abristeis los regalos.  You all opened your presents. EXAMPLES

Verbs you should know:  -ir verbs: escribir, compartir, vivir, subir, salir, abrir, recibir  -er verbs: aprender, beber, comer, correr, vender, deber, entender, perder, barrer, comprender, volver, envolver, conocer  ver: follows the pattern but there are no accent marks vi, viste, vio, vimos, visteis,vieron

-er & -ir stem-changing verbs:  - er verbs that change their stem in the present tense do not change in the preterite. They are conjugated just like other regular preterite verbs.  -ir verbs that change their stem in the present tense also change in the preterite, but in a different way. They change e to i and o to u in the third person, singular and plural. Juan d u rmió tarde ayer.Juan slept late yesterday. Ellos d u rmieron en la casa de Juan.They slept at Juan’s house.
