La Navidad es una fecha de unión familiar, compartir con los seres queridos y, para muchos, un momento de reflexión. La Navidad es una de las principales celebraciones del cristianismo y se celebra cada 25 de diciembre conmemorando el nacimiento de Jesús. En España, como en otros países, hay algunas costumbres y tradiciones propias del país y en esta presentación te hacemos un repaso por las principales tradiciones navideñas de España. Christmas is a time of family togetherness, sharing with loved ones and, for many, a time of reflection. Christmas is one of the most important Christian celebrations and is held every December 25th to commemorate the birth of Jesus. In Spain, as in other countries, there are some customs and traditions of the country and in this presentation we make a review of the main Christmas traditions in Spain.

Villancicos Christmas carols Los villancicos son canciones típicas de Navidad que se canta cada año en estas fechas. . Christmas carols Carols are Christmas song which are sung every year in these dates.

Lotería de Navidad Christmas Lottery Se realiza el 22 de diciembre. Este día es importante porque inician las vacaciones en las escuelas y porque se paralizan millones de españoles para escuchar los números de la lotería. Este sorteo se realiza desde 1763 y para muchos españoles, es la actividad que da inicio a las celebraciones navideñas. Christmas Lottery Is performed on 22 December. This day is important because the holidays begin in schools and because millions of Spanish people are paralyzed to hear the lottery numbers. This draw has been performance since 1763 and for many Spanish people, it is the activity that starts the Christmas celebrations.

Nochebuena Christmas Eve Es el día en el que se celebra la víspera del nacimiento de Jesús (24 de Diciembre). Durante la Nochebuena se cena con la familia y después de cenar se comen dulces típicos navideños (turrón, mazapán, polvorón..) y se cantan villancicos. Es una ocasión para que familiares que no viven cerca se reúnan. Christmas Eve It is the day that Eve is celebrated the birth of Jesus.(24th December) During the Christmas Eve people have dinner with their family and after dinner they eat some of the typical Christmas sweets (nougat, marzipan, polvorón …) and carols are sung.  It is an occasion for family who live close to come together.

On this day the birth of Jesus Christ is commemorated. (25th December) Navidad En este día se conmemora el Nacimiento de Jesucristo. (25 de Diciembre) El día de Navidad se celebra con una comida similar a la cena de Nochebuena, y suele tener lugar o en la misma casa donde se celebró la Nochebuena, o en casa de otro familiar. A la comida le sigue una larga sobremesa Christmas On this day the birth of Jesus Christ is commemorated. (25th December) Christmas Day is celebrated with a similar meal as the Christmas Eve dinner, and usually takes place in the same house where they celebrated Christmas Eve, or in the house of another relative. The dishes are followed by a big dessert.

Nochevieja New Year’s Eve El último día del año se celebra la Nochevieja. Después de cenar el 31 de diciembre, según la tradición, a las 12 en punto de la noche, se toman las 12 uvas de la suerte al son de las campanas en la Puerta del Sol de Madrid o viéndolo por la televisión. Después la gente se felicita el Año Nuevo besándose y brindando con cava (a veces sidra). Según la tradición, los que comen las uvas tendrán 12 meses de prosperidad durante el año que viene New Year’s Eve The last day of the year, New Year‘s Eve is celebrated. On 31 December after dinner, according to tradition, at midnight, 12 lucky grapes are taken while the bells are sounding in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid or watching television.  Then people welcome the New Year kissing and toasting with champagne (sometimes cider). According to tradition, people who eat the 12 grapes will have 12 months of prosperity during the next year

LOS TRES REYES MAGOS THE THREE WISE MEN

La cabalgata de Reyes Magos Cavalcade of Three Wise Man El 5 de enero, por la tarde, es tradicional la Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, en la que desfilan los Reyes con su séquito y los regalos que van a dejar a los niños esa noche. Los Reyes Magos lanzan caramelos a los niños. Los niños saludan a los Reyes y les piden los regalos. El desfile suele terminar en el ayuntamiento, donde los Reyes dirigen unas palabras a todos los niños. On 5th January, in the evening, it is traditional the Cavalcade of Three Wise Men, the Kings parade with their entourage and gifts that will leave to kids that night. The Three Wise Men throw sweets to children. Children greet the Kings and ask them for their gifts.   The parade usually ends at Town Hall, where Three Wise Man say some words to all children. 6 de enero, día de los Reyes Magos 6th January, Three Wise Men Date En la noche del 5 al 6 de enero los niños dejan sus zapatos en un lugar visible de la casa y se acuestan con la ilusión de despertar y descubrir los regalos que les han dejado Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar. Junto a los zapatos los niños dejan comida para los Reyes. Deben estar dormidos cuando lleguen los Reyes y, si han sido buenos, recibirán los juguetes que han pedido a los Reyes en sus cartas. Si no lo han sido, recibirán carbón dulce. 6th January, Three Wise Men Date On the night of 5th to January 6th children leave their shoes in a visible place at home and they sleep with the illusion of awakening and discover the presents Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar have left. Along with the shoes children leave food for the Three Wise Men. They must be asleep when the Kings arrive and if they have been good will they receive the toys that have asked the Three Wise Men in their letters. If they haven’t been, they will receive sweet coal.
