2 How do we ask for the time?
To ask “What time is it?” we say ¿Qué hora es? (literally meaning “What hour is it?” To answer, we might respond with a variety of answers. Look at the examples: Español Inglés Es la una. Es la una y media. Son las dos y diez. Son las tres menos diez. Es mediodía. Es medianoche. It’s one o’clock. It’s 1:30 It’s 2:10 It’s 10 ‘til 3 It’s noon It’s midnight

3 La hora In Spanish, “ser” is used to express time. Use “es” for one o’clock, noon and midnight. Use “son” for any other time. Español Inglés Es la una. Es medianoche. Es Mediodía Son las cinco Son las once. Son las nueve It’s one o’clock. It’s noon. It’s midnight. It’s five o’clock. It’s eleven o’clock. It’s nine o’clock.

The feminine articles (la, las) are used before the hour because it refers to “la hora.” Español inglés Es la una. Son las dos. It’s one o’clock. It’s two o’clock.

5 “Y” Es la una y cinco. Son las tres y doce.
Minutes can be added to the hour using the word “y” (and). español Inglés Es la una y cinco. Son las tres y doce. It’s five minutes past one (it’s 1:05) It’s twelve minutes past three (it’s 3:12)

6 “Menos” Es la una menos cinco. Son las tres menos doce.
Minutes can be subtracted from the hour using the word “menos (minus). Español inglés Es la una menos cinco. Son las tres menos doce. It’s five minutes ‘til one (12:55). It’s twelve minutes ‘til three (2:48).

7 “media” y “cuarto” You can also use the words media (half) and cuarto (quarter) español inglés Es la una y media. Son las dos y cuarto. Son las tres menos cuarto. It’s half past one (1:30). It’s a quarter past two (2:15). It’s a quarter ‘til three (2:45).

8 A.M. vs. P.M. To differentiate between a.m. and p.m., use the expressions de la mañana, de la tarde and de la noche. español inglés Son las dos de la tarde. Son las dos de la mañana. Son las diez de la noche. It’s two in the afternoon. It’s two in the morning. It’s ten in the evening.

9 A formula for time might look like this:
(Es/Son) + (la/las) + (hour) + (y/menos) + (minutes) + time of day

10 Son las ocho y veinte de la mañana.
