3 ¿Que hora es? The verb ser is used to express the time of day. Use es when referring to "one o'clock" and use son when referring to all other hours. If the answer is 1 o'clock or any number related to 1, like 1:15, 1:30, etc. the answer would be: Es la una. Es la una y quince (cuarto), Es la una y media, etc.

4 If the answer is not a variation of 1 o'clock, you answer with "SON," since it is plural. ¿Que hora es? Son las dos. Son las ocho y quince (Cuarto). Son las diez y media.

5 The feminine article (la, las) is used before the hour because it refers to "la hora.“ Es la una. It's one o'clock. Son las dos. It's two o'clock.

6 Do you see the pattern? Minutes can be added to the hour using the word y (and). Son las cuatro y cinco. (It's 4:05.) Son las tres y doce. (It’s 3:12)

7 One funny thing we often see in Spanish is the use of the word "menos" or less, when answering. Whereas in English we might say "it's 10 till 8," to indicate 10 minutes until 8 o'clock, or 7:50, - In Spanish we would say "it's 8 less 10" - or "son las ocho menos diez."

8 So…minutes can be subtracted from the hour using the word menos (less). Es la una menos cinco minutos. It's five minutes till one. Son las tres menos doce minutos. It's twelve minutes till three.

9 You can also use the words media (half) and cuarto (quarter). For example, "son las cinco y media" = it's 5:30. Son las dos y cuarto. ( It's quarter past two.) Son las tres menos cuarto. ( It's quarter till three.)

10 To say something occurs at a specific time, use the formula a + la(s) + time. La fiesta empieza a las nueve. The party begins at nine o'clock. El banco abre a las ocho y media. The bank opens at half past eight.
