2 REPASO – R EVIEW : ¿Cuántos segundos en un minuto? 60 seconds = 1 minute ¿Cuántos minutos en una hora? 60 minutes = 1 hour ¿Cuántas horas en un día? 24 hours = 1 day 12 hours = a.m. 12 hours = p.m.

3 REPASO – R EVIEW : Therefore: If there are 60 minutes in 1 hour, then how many minutes are there in a half an hour? ½ hora = 30 minutos  “media”

4 REPASO – R EVIEW : Therefore: If there are 30 minutes in a ½ hour, then how many minutes are in a quarter of an hour (1/4) ? ¼ hora = 15 minutos  “cuarto”

7 ¿Q UÉ HORA ES ? – ADDITION To state what time it IS, you almost always say “Son las (hour) y (minutes)” Ejemplo: Son las tres y diez Son las once Son las cinco y media BUT when it is 1 o’clock (a.m. or p.m.) you say “Es la (hour) y (minutes)” Ejemplo: Es la una Es la una y veinte

8 ¿Q UÉ HORA ES ? – ADDITION Write the times using numerals: Son las dos Son las doce y media Son las siete y ocho Es la una y cuarto Son las diez y cuarenta The clock would read: 2:00 12:30 7:08 1:15 10:40

9 ¿A QUÉ HORA ES …? To state what time something is AT, you say “A las…” “A la…” Ejemplo: -- “¿A qué hora es la fiesta el sábado? -- “ La fiesta es a las siete de la noche”

10 ¿Q UÉ HORA ES ? – ADDITION What is the difference between? Es la una de la mañana Es la una de la tarde A las nueve de la noche The clock would read: 1:00 a.m. (in the morning) 1:00 p.m. (in the afternoon) 9:00 p.m. (in the evening)

11 ¿Q UÉ HORA ES ? – SUBTRACTION To state what time it is, sometimes it is easier to SUBRACT the minutes from the next hour. English time = to 3:55  “It’s three fifty-five” 3:55  “It’s five to four” Spanish time = (next hour) menos (minutes) 3:55  “Son las tres y cincuenta y cinco” 3:55  “Son las cuatro menos cinco”
