17 Ser vs. Estar (to be) Ser and estar both mean to be in Spanish, but they have different uses Uses of ser To identify people and things  Ricardo es mi amigo. To say where someone is from (origin)  Ricardo es de México. To describe someone’s personality/physical characteristics  Ricardo es alto y simpático. To give the day, date, and time  Es martes. Es el 8 de septiembre. Son las diez de la mañana. Uses of estar To say the location of someone or something  ¿Dónde está el baño? To ask and say how people are doing  ¿Cómo estás? Estoy bien, gracias.

18 Ser and estar when talking about food Use ser to describe what foods and drinks are normally like ¿Cómo es el arroz con pollo? (What is chicken and rice like?) Es riquísimo. (It’s delicious) Use estar to say how something looks, tastes, or feels at a particular moment ¿Cómo está tu sopa? (How is your soup?) Está fría. (It’s cold)

19 Pedir and Servir In some –ir verbs, with an e in the stem, the e changes to an i in all present-tense forms except nosotros and vosotros. Examples: pedir (to ask for) servir (to serve)

20 Conjuguemos a “servir” juntos  These verbs are often referred to as “boot verbs” because if you draw a line around the forms that have the stem change, it looks like a boot.  Every person inside of the boot gets the stem change.  None of the forms outside of the boot (nosotros or vosotros) get the stem change.
