5 Time with “menos” For minutes :31-59…. Instead of saying Y, you say MENOS. When we use menos, we subtract from the next hour up. ____ + ____ + ____ + ____ + ____ Son/Es + las/la + hora + y/menos + minuto Think of the expression “it’s ten of _____” or “it’s ten ‘til _____”.

6 Por ejemplo... Round up to 5, find the minutes to the next hour (60-54=6) Son las cinco menos seis. (It is 5 minus 6) Round up to 9, find the minutes to the next hours (60-55=5) Son las nueve menos cinco. (It is 9 minus 5) Round up to 8, find the minutes to the next hour (60-37=23) Son las ocho menos veintitres. (It is 8 minus 23)
