Gender of nouns Nouns refer to people, animals, places, things, and ideas. In Spanish, all nouns have gender. They are either masculine or feminine. This does not mean that nouns are male and female.

Gender Most nouns that end in –o are masculine. Ex. El libro, el cuaderno, el bolígrafo Most nouns that end in –a are feminine. Ex. La carpeta, la hoja de papel

Gender The definite articles el and la also point out if a word in masculine or feminine. El and la both mean “the.”
