Present Progressive Definition: ◦We use the present tense to say that things are happening in the present. Today, we are going to discuss how to EMPHASIZE that those things are happening AT THIS MOMENT. ◦Yo hablo. (I talk, I am talking) ◦Yo estoy hablando. (I am talking at this moment.)

Forming the Present Progressive El verbo estar + Present Participle (gerund) Estar Estoy Estamos Estás Estáis Está Están 1. Drop: –ar, -er, ir 2. Add to stem: ◦-ar = ando ◦-er/-ir = iendo **When stem ends in a vowel change “i” to “y” = yendo ***This does not affect –guir verbs.

Irregular Present Participles “-ir” verbs that stem-change take the stem-change in the participle as well. The stem-change will be e i, and o u only. Exception: Poder pudiendo Examples: Vestirse, repetir, servir, morir ◦Siguiendo (seguir) ◦Durmiendo (dormir) ◦Sintiendo (sentir)

Present Progressive Questions: ¿Qué estás haciendo?¿Estás _____a/iendo? This question is asking: What are you doing? Remember we can change estar for any person that we want to ask about: Just conjugate estar for that person. This question is asking: Are you _____ing? Again, we can change estar to ask about any person.

Time Questions ¿Qué hora es?¿A qué hora? This is the question to ask for the current time). Answer: ◦Es + la + hora (1 o’clock). ◦Son + las + hora (other times). This question is asking “At what time” something will occur. Answer: ◦Event + verb + a + la/las + time.
