5 El Presente Progresivo
In English you would never say: “He walking.” or “She working.” You say: He’s walking. or He is walking. She’s working. or She is working. We do the same in Spanish: Never leave out the verb ESTAR ESTAR + -ando or -iendo

6 ESTAR y el Participio + -ando -iendo He’s walking. El está caminando.

8 ¿En inglés o en español? In English you can say:
I am working right now or I am working tomorrow *** In Spanish you cannot do this. The progressive in Spanish is ONLY used to describe an action that is in process at the moment we are talking (ahora mismo). *** In Spanish we can use the expression IR + A + Infinitive to refer to the near future (tomorrow). Estoy trabajando ahora mismo. Voy a trabajar mañana.

9 Por ejemplo… Unas oraciones usando el presente progresivo:
Right now Juan, Andrés, Alicia, Pedro and I are doing something… ESTAR Participio presente Juan está escribiendo la carta. Andrés y Alicia están comiendo un burrito. Pedro y yo estamos jugando a las cartas.

10 Más ejemplos…: It is always necessary to use the verb estar and the participle (–ando / –iendo) of the main (action) verb Amanda y su bebé están durmiendo. Amalia está lavando los platos. ¿Vosotros estáis estudiando? Tú estás pensando mucho en este examen. Mis amigos están llamando por teléfono. ¿Quién está hablando en clase?

11 A couple little tricky things….
Sometimes you must change the spelling in order to maintain the original sound of the word. This is called an orthographic change. Some common examples are: caer: cayendo creer: creyendo huir: huyendo ir: yendo influir: influyendo oír: oyendo traer: trayendo leer: leyendo seguir: siguiendo One way to remember which to change is to conjugate the verb “normally” and if you end up with three (3) vowels in a row, then you need to replace the “i” with “y”. present progressive…-ING

14 One more little tricky thing….
To form the present participle of -ir stem changing verbs, change e->i and o->u in the stem, and then add -iendo to the stem of the verb. e->i servir (to serve) pedir (to ask for) decir (to say) servir sirvir sirviendo pidiendo pedir ->>> diciendo decir ->>> o->u dormir (to sleep) morir (to die) poder (to be able to) durmir dormir durmiendo morir ->>> muriendo poder ->>> pudiendo present progressive…-ING
