9 8 The GERUND/ el GERUNDIO IS OFTEN USED BY ITSELF IT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF –BY + PRESENT PARTICIPLE BY WORKING, we earn money. TRABAJANDO, ganamos dinero. BY BEING at home, I can rest. ESTANDO en casa, puedo descansar.

10 9 Present progressive and object pronouns Object pronouns ( direct, indirect and reflexive) are either Attached to the present participle or placed before the “auxiliary verb”. Estoy comprandolo. (direct object) Lo estoy comprando. Está contandome un chiste. (indirect object) Me está contando un chiste. Estamos vistiendonos. (reflexive pronoun) Nos estamos vistiendo.

12 11 In English you would never say: “He walking.” or “She working.” You say: He’s walking. or He is walking. She’s working. or She is working. ESTAR + -ando or -iendo El Presente Progresivo We do the same in Spanish: Never leave out the verb ESTAR

The progressive in Spanish is ONLY used to describe an action that is in process at the moment we are talking (ahora mismo). In Spanish we use the expression IR + A + Infinitive to refer to the near future (tomorrow). Voy a trabajar mañana. I am working tomorrow. I’m going to work tomorrow
