2 In English the verb _to_ _be_ is the most common verb. It has _many_ _uses_. Some of them are to _describe_ or _name_ people or things, to _say_ where people are from, to _give_ the date, day and time, and to _give a telephone number. Like all verbs, _to_ be_ is _conjugated_, that is, it _changes_ its form to match the subject.

3 I am Carlos. We are from Argentina. You are from Managua. They are my friends. Today is Friday. You are a student.

Circle the form of the verb to be in the following sentences, and underline the subject of the sentence. 1.Yolanda is from Maracay, Venezuela. 2.It is ten o’ clock. 3.Tomorrow is Thursday. 4.We are your cousins. 5.I am from Valparaiso, Chile. 6.You are a very good student. 7.Mr. Matute and Mrs. Shumway are our teachers. 8.You are my best friend.

5 In Spanish the verb ser (to be) is also used to describe or define people or things, to say where people are from, to give the date, day and time, and to give a telephone number.

6 Just like to be in English, ser is irregular. It changes a verb form so that it matches its subject. This is the conjugation of the verb ser (to be).

8 With nouns and names of people, use the same form of the verb as for él/ella or ellos/ellas. Mi profesora es de Cuba. Juan y Carlos son de España. To make a sentence negative, place no in front of the verb. Mi profesora no es de México. Es de España.

14 Punctuation marks and written accents 1. In Spanish, upside-down punctuation marks such as (¿) and (¡) are placed at the beginning of a phrase to signal a question or an exclamation. These are used along with those that come at the end of phrases. ¡Hasta luego! ¿Cómo se llama ella?
