3 Did you know that Students can lose up to three months worth of reading progress over one summer. And, If you take into consideration all summers combined, students could possibly lose 1.5 years’ worth of reading progress. 4 Good News Buenas Noticias The good news is that if children read just six books over summer vacation, they will likely avoid summer reading loss. Here are a few ideas for reaching--and going beyond--this six book goal: Si los niños leen sólo seis libros durante las vacaciones de verano, es probable evitar la pérdida de lectura de verano. 7 As you're reading aloud, be sure to interact with your child by asking what she thinks might happen next, what a certain character is likely to do, whether the story is real or make-believe, and so forth. Literacy-building sites such as PBS KIDS Island for children ages 3-5, and the Great Word Quest for ages 6-8 (both of which are free) are great examples. 10 Summer reading loss can be defeated through:  time spent reading with your student  providing a variety of reading material  using various Internet resources (sites provided on our website)  encouraging them to just read for fun and the pleasure of learning! 16 Schedule time for reading on a daily basis throughout the summer will help support your students’ reading development.

18 Cook with your child ! Cocinar con tus hijos! This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading and following directions. Let your child design the menu too!! 25 The Green Cove Springs Public Library has a wonderful summer reading program and activities planned for Summer 2015 for ages 2-17! 26 New Sumner Initiative Little Free Library What is a Little Free Library? The libraries are hand- crafted structures that houses books for “return and take” Non-Profit, tax-exempt organization which promotes literacy for children and adults throughout the community The libraries will be strategically placed throughout the district including Oakleaf area.
