The Spanish future tense is formed with only one set of endings for the -ar, -er, and -ir verbs. For regular verbs, the endings are attached to the infinitive, as follows: hablar é hablar emos hablar ás hablar á hablar án Again, the infinitive is the basis for all forms of regular verbs. Don’t drop the endings! Notice that all forms except nosotros/as carry a written accent.

8 Notice that… The future tense conjugations are the same for –ar, -er, and –ir verbs. So you only have ONE set of endings to memorize! You don’t have to worry about stem-changing verbs in the future tense! There are only 10 irregulars – which we’ll learn. You don’t even have to drop the verb ending from the infinitive, so the verb is very easy to identify!

11 Some Facts About the Future Tense
As in English, the Spanish future tense expresses what will happen in the future. The English equivalent is will + verb. Estudiaré informática en la universidad. I will study computer science at the university. Ustedes comprarán pronto otro disco duro. You will buy a new hard drive soon. Keep in mind that in English the subject and will are often contracted: You’ll buy a new hard drive soon.

Remember that the present tense is often used to express immediate future in Spanish (near future events only). El técnico viene para arreglar mi computadora hoy. The technician will come (is coming) to fix my computer today. Termino mi trabajo esta tarde. I will finish my paper this afternoon.

The future may also be conveyed with the present tense of ir + a + infinitive. Voy a arreglar la computadora. I am going to fix the computer. ¿Vas a archivar ese documento? Are you going to save that document?

In fact, the construction ir + a + infinitive tends to be used more often than the actual future tense! Vamos a instalar el programa We are going to install the program. ¿Van a imprimir ese documento? Are you all going to print that document?

BUT, some Spanish-speakers feel that the future tense shows a higher degree of certainty than present or ir + a + infinitive. So placing the verb in the future tense shows more conviction (according to many Spanish-speakers). Voy a terminar el proyecto. I am going to finish the project. Terminaré el proyecto. I will finish the project (for sure).

The idea of willingness, sometimes expressed with the English future, cannot be expressed with the Spanish future tense. Use verbs like querer or the simple present tense to express willingness. ¿Quieres ayudarme con la impresora? Will you help me with the printer? ¿Me traes el otro programa? Will you bring me the other program?

24 Haber Note that the future tense of haber is used in a compound tense so that’s why we learn all the forms. But for testing purposes for 1020, we will use habrá to say “there will be.” Example: Present tense: Hay una fiesta el lunes. Hay 25 invitados. There is a party on Monday. 30 A Special Use of the Future Tense
Probability or conjecture with regard to the present is often expressed in Spanish with the future tense. This use of the future has many equivalents in English; for example: probably, may, I wonder, etc. ¿Dónde estará Antonio? I wonder where Antonio is? Estará jugando juegos electrónicos. He’s probably playing computer games. ¿Qué hora será? What time can it be? Serán las seis. It must be six.
