Property of Ashley E. Wood

Present Progressive Present progressive is something we have already seen, when we were working with “estar” It’s used to talk about what someone is doing in the moment. It corresponds to the gerund “-ing” in English (such as: I am walking).

How to form You have two parts: A form of “estar” that goes with the subject. Estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están. A form of the “-ando” or “-iendo”

How to form the “-ing” part Take off the “-ar” Add “-ando” Take off the “-er” or the “-ir” Add the “-iendo” Hablar → hablando Conducir → conduciendo Poner → poniendo

What to do with “ir” stem-changing verbs If the verb stem-changes in the present tense, it will stem change in it’s present participle form as well. If it’s “e → i” it will stem change “e → i” If it’s “o → ue” it will stem change “o → u” Examples: Pedir → pidiendo Dormir → durmiendo Jugar → jugando Divertirse → divirtiéndose Reírse → riéndose

Verbs ending in –uir With the verbs that end in “-uir” as well as “oír, leer or anything that ends in –aer (such as traer), you add a “y”. Construir – construyendo Disminuir – disminuyendo Leer – leyendo Oír – oyendo Creer – creyendo Traer - trayendo

Examples Estoy hablando ahora. I am talking now. Manuel está caminando al parque. Manuel is walking to the park. Mis padres están sirviendo café. My parents are serving coffee. Nos estamos vistiendo para salir. We are getting dressed to go out.

Pronouns? Either before the conjugated verb. Me estoy poniendo los pantalones. Me los estoy poniendo. Or attached to the end of the gerund. Estoy poniéndome los pantalones. Estoy poniéndomelos.

Verbs you can do this with… Estar (most common) Estoy caminando, Martín está estudiando, etc. Seguir (to continue doing something) Sigo hablando, Martín sigue llamando a su novia. Andar (to go around doing something) Ando buscándote. Ando fumando en las calles. Pasar (to spend time doing something) Paso todo el día estudiando para la clase de español. Mi perro pasa todo el día durmiendo.

When NOT to use this Nouns Swimming is fun. Nadar es divertido Jumping is dangerous. Saltar es peligroso. “While” While smoking, he realized he had forgotten his wallet. Mientras fumaba, se dio cuenta que se había olvidado la cartera. Future I am going to get a good grade in this class. Voy a sacar una buena nota en esta clase. Adjective The students taking the exam need to be here at 8. Los estudiantes que van a tomar el examen necesitan estar aquí a las 8. Before, after, etc* Before going to school, the children eat breakfast. Antes de ir a la escuela, los niños desayunan. *This really fits under our “preposition” rule, after a preposition, you do not conjugate the verb.
