2 Gustar – to like…or is it?
We have learned that “Me gustan los deportes” means “I like sports.” BUT, that’s not EXACTLY true! It actually means “Sports are pleasing to me”

3 In Spanish we say “Basketball is pleasing
to me” instead of “I like basketball”. So, let’s take a look at this. ¿Cómo se dice …? I like basketball _____________________ I like baseball ______________________ 3. I like soccer _______________________

4 What about you? (tú) If you want to ask a friend if they like something, you would use “te”. Por ejemplo, ¿qué significa…? ¿Te gusta el fútbol americano? ¿Te gusta la Coca Cola? ¿Te gusta el chocolate?

Do you like soccer? Do you like the book? Do you like baseball? Do you like basketball?

6 It’s gets a little trickier…
So far, we have only dealt with SINGULAR items (I like football, I like chocolate, etc.) Watch what happens with plural items: Me gustan los deportes. Me gustan los libros. Me gustan las clases.

7 But why? – ¿Por qué? Remember, GUSTAR means “to be pleasing to”
So the VERB changes to match the SUBJECT which is not me, it’s SPORTS. Me gustan los deportes. Sports are pleasing to me.

8 What about ‘te’? It works the same way! Do you like sports?
¿Te gustan los deportes? Do you like dogs? ¿Te gustan los perros?

9 Now you try… 1. ¿Te ___________ la historia?
2. No me ____________ el álgebra. 3. Me ___________ mucho el español. 4. ¿Te __________ las noticias? 5. No me ___________ escribir la tarea. 6. Me __________ estudiar las sciencias. 7. ¿No te __________ los perros?

10 One more thing… When a gustar phrase is followed by a verb, no matter how many verbs follow “gusta” is always “gusta” (singular – not gustan) AND the verbs are always in the infinitive. Me gusta jugar y mirar deportes. Me gusta montar en bicicleta y conducir mi carro.

11 Interesar y Aburrir These verbs work the same way as gustar.
Me interesan las sciencias (The sciences interest me) Me aburren las noticias. (The news bores me.) Me interesa la historia. (History interests me.)

12 Interesar y Aburrir Me interesa el libro. Me interesan los libros.
Me aburre la clase. Me aburren las clases.

14 Put it all together… 1. Me ________ mucho los deportes. (interesar)
2. ¿Qué deporte te ________ más? (gustar) 3. Me _________ más el básquetbol. (gustar) 4. ¿No te _________ los deportes? (aburrir)

15 More emphasis… 1. A mí, me gusta la Coca Cola, pero a mi esposo le gusta la Dr. Pepper. 2. A ti, ¿te gusta más el chocolate o la vainilla?

16 You try… 1. A ___, me interesa jugar los deportes.
2. A ___, ¿te aburre mirar el béisbol? 3. “Jose, a ___, __ gustan los vegetales?” 4. “Sí, a ___, ___ gustan los vegetales.
