Use the subjunctive with the impersonal expressions: Es necesario que… Es triste que… Es malo que… Etc. Subjuntivo

3 Repaso: Deseo y Esperanza
Use the subjunctive with expressions of hope and wishes Quiero que ella cante. Sugiere que tú comas la torta.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre las oraciones abajo? Yo quiero que ella cante. Yo quiero cantar.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre las oraciones abajo? Yo quiero que ella cante. S V S V Yo quiero cantar. S V The first sentence has 2 subjects in 2 clauses. The second has the same subject.

*use the subjunctive with 2 subjects *use the infinitive (without “que”) with one subject

Yo quiero que ella hable. S V S V (I want her to talk.) With a change in subject between the 2 clauses, you use the subjunctive.

Yo quiero que yo hable. Yo quiero hablar. (I want to talk.) Same subject infinitive

9 Práctica Yo prefiero que ella _______ (bailar).
Ella prefiere __________ (bailar). baile 2 sujetos bailar 1 sujeto

12 El Infinitivo If the subject of the second verb is unknown…use the infinitive Es malo caminar en la calle. It’s bad to walk in the street. No subject…general

13 Infinitivo v. Subjuntivo
Es bueno cantar. It’s good to sing. Es bueno que ella cante. It’s good that she sings. No subject: infinitive “ella” is subject: subjunctive

14 Traducciones 1. It is necessary that she listens.
Es necesario que ella escuche. 2. It is necessary to listen. Es necesario escuchar. 3. I want her to listen. Quiero que ella escuche. 4. I want to listen. Quiero escuchar.

15 Traducciones I want to take pictures. They recommend that we leave.
Quiero sacar fotos. They recommend that we leave. Ellos recomiendan que salgamos. It is important to clean the room. Es importante limpiar el cuarto. It is probable that the door is brown. Es probable que la puerta sea marrón.
